Folks here need to know that the idea of Sanctuary is still very much alive, and there are those of us who are working very hard to continue to give it life.
Several months ago, folks will recall that there was talk of a property in Southern Utah that would provide a solid foundational base for Phase I of the Sanctuary project. This is still very much in the works. There are those of us here whom have visited the farm four times now, and I myself am planning a trip down again in the very near future, to spend an entire weekend discussing with the owners the next steps forward. I am spending a great deal of time putting together a detailed business plan, outlining the specific details of the proposed projects involved in this: project timelines, manpower needed, marketing and promotions, supply and infrastructure costs, licensing and regulatory requirements, and much more. The owners are intending to share with me a lifetime's worth of information (via external drive) that they themselves have gathered together pertaining to the proposed 'next stages' of expansion on the farm, as a tool that I can use to further work out the details that are currently being set into place. And proposed commitments will be set forth, by both parties, as a means of seeing whether or not this can continue forward.
YES, more people are needed, and YES, finances to fund said projects are also needed, but there are those of us here who are well of aware of these factors, and these are a central part of the current nature of the discussions with the owners, as there are possibilities being discussed on both of these fronts.
Understand that the idea of Sanctuary has shifted and changed. For twenty years, I have been paying close attention to the so-called 'intentional community' movement happening all over the world, in thousands of locations. Just like any truly sincere effort to create change for the better, you won't hear about it, unless you go searching for it. I have always believed that to make such a thing work, it requires collaboration and open lines of communication with others. I fully understand that the foundation of Sanctuary was that of a community similar in nature to Shangri-La: An isolated community, 500 miles from civilization, in which a new way of life would be created; a lifeboat for the sinking ship that is humanity. It is a beautiful idea, but one that must be taken in steps and stages. And though I have been more than willing to listen and to hear, I have always truly believed that collaboration with other such efforts are a necessary part of getting this off the ground, and breathing life into it, thus making it more than an idea, but a reality. I truly believe that we must engage society. And "if we make mistakes, then they'll be our mistakes." I understand this, but I won't know until I "do, or do not." As the old saying goes, "It's time to piss or get off the pot."
Spending so much of my time, effort, and even my own finances on the continued efforts to help to make this a reality, it is difficult to hear that the idea has 'failed'. It has not, and I am not the only one who feels this way. Folks must make their own determination as to what they believe is possible, but just know that I have not yet given up on this.
And as a final note: I spent this last weekend sick in bed, and went back and watched Star Trek IV and VI (my favs. in the series.) This idea of an "undiscovered country" has very much been on my mind lately. What was it that Chancellor Gorkon said to Kirk? "You don't trust me, do you? I don't blame you. If there is to be a brave new world, then our generation is going to have the hardest time living in it." The obvious reference to Huxley aside, I think that this rings with truth. And as Kirk said to Gorkon's daughter Azetbur, "Some people believe that the future means the end of history. Well, we haven't run out of history quite yet. Your father called the future the undiscovered country. People can be very frightened of change."
I don't think we yet know what Sanctuary looks like, because the idea morphs and changes. Let's at least have some patience and see what manifests as a result of the current efforts being made. Is that too much to ask?
